History
Korean language education at The University of Hong Kong began in 2007, followed by the establishment of the Korean Studies Major in 2012. Since then, the Korean Studies Programme at HKU has grown into a leading centre for Korean Studies education and research in Hong Kong and the region. The programme offers both undergraduate and postgraduate learning pathways, with a strong focus on Korean language, culture, society, and contemporary Korea.
Since graduating its first cohort in 2014, the programme has produced 253 major graduates and 312 minor graduates as of the 2025-26 academic year. Korean Studies has emerged as one of the most dynamic fields of study, attracting an increasing number of students and reflecting growing global interest in Korea.

Our Approach
Our approach to Korean Studies combines interdisciplinary learning, language training, experiential education, and engagement with contemporary Korea. Students explore Korea through a wide range of courses on language, history, literature, culture, society, and popular culture, while also developing strong analytical and intercultural skills.

Through Korean language courses, Korean Studies courses, study-abroad opportunities, internships, field trips, and capstone projects, the programme encourages students to connect classroom learning with real-world experience and to understand Korea in both regional and global contexts.
