Theorizing Colonial Cinematic Networks in East Asia

This talk elaborates on an international collaborative project “Antinomies of the Colonial Archive” on trans-colonial film co-productions in East Asia (Cross Currents: East Asian History and Culture Review). The project invited scholars, students, and archivists working on past cinematic networks from Japan, China, Korea and North America to think together about the ongoing problems of divided legacies of colonial and cold war histories in East Asia and the Asia-Pacific today. The talk reflects on opportunities and challenges that emerged from the transnational collaborative to consider future possibilities in theorizing colonial cinematic networks and their afterlives.

Nayoung Aimee Kwon is an associate professor in Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, Arts of the Moving Image and Women’s Studies at Duke University. Her research revolves around the study of empires past and present, and she is currently teaching and researching in China on a project on the dilemmas of visibility and invisibility in (Post)Cold War visual cultures.
